STD Testing
Q & A
Do I need an STD test?
If you’re sexually active, it’s recommended to test for STDs on a regular basis. Generally, you should get tested once a year and every time you have sexual relations with a new partner.
If you think you might need an STD test, it not only helps you but also helps your current or any future partners stay healthy and disease-free. Many STDs come with little or no symptoms. That means you could be carrying a disease without even knowing it. Regular testing ensures you’re informed about your status and can make safe, responsible decisions about your sexual health.
Which STDs should I be tested for?
NY Family Docs can test you for a wide range of STDs — including HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and more — to ensure that none are affecting your health. Once you’ve had a first, comprehensive test, you and your health provider may decide to adjust how often you get future STD tests based on your lifestyle and symptoms.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following:
Women under 25
Should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia annually.
Women over 25
Should also get an annual test if they have new sexual partners.
Gay and bisexual men
Should be tested for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea annually and get tested for HIV every three to six months.
Anyone who has sex without protection should be tested for HIV annually.

What should I expect during my STD testing?
There are different tests for the different STDs. We will tell you what to expect before your appointment. Some of the most common types of STD tests use:
- A urine sample
- A cheek swab
- A blood sample
- A physical exam
No matter which STD test you need, you can have it performed in the comfort and convenience of a NY Family Docs office. Our team is dedicated to offering discreet, easy, in-house testing.
