Physicals
Q & A
Are different types of physicals offered?
You’re likely already familiar with a general physical, the preventive visit you need once a year to talk about any health concerns or to find ones you didn’t know about. The physical is an ideal way to catch potential health issues in their earliest stages when treatment is the easiest and most effective. However, there are other types of physicals that may be needed.
Different physicals are designed for different purposes. For example, a sports physical is used to decide if you’re healthy enough to engage in your desired sport. Another physical is required during the immigration process to screen for any conditions that U.S. Public Health Services has marked as a concern. A work physical is to make sure that you are physically fit for the job you will be performing.
We work hard to make it easy for you to get your physical, no matter what type you need. We offer physicals for:
Work
School
Immigration
Sports
General Wellness
What should I expect during a physical?
The process will depend on the type of physical you need.
In general, most types of physicals will include some of the same basic components, including:
- A conversation about your personal and family health history
- A review of your current medications
- A check of your vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure
- Screening for certain diseases
- A heart exam
- A lung exam
Some of these processes might sound involved, but checking your internal organs is actually fairly simple. Your physical provider uses a stethoscope to check your heart and lung activity, for example. It’s all done on the outside of your body.
But do not hesitate to raise any health concerns with NY Family Docs during any type of physical. We are committed to helping you protect your health.
How do I prepare for my physical?
Ask your doctor about what to expect. Sports physicals can require that you move certain ways, so athletic clothing would be recommended. Ask the NY Family Docs team in advance and they’ll help you prepare properly.
Whatever type of physical you need, call NY Family Docs or go online for an appointment.
