When you have a hard time breathing it can be very scary and it is important to see an experienced healthcare provider at NY Family Docs to find out what is causing the problem. You will receive a complete medical exam which may include a breathing test, called spirometry, which is available at any of our ten neighborhood offices in Brooklyn and Queens.
An accurate diagnosis of chronic breathing problems may identify asthma or COPD, after which you can get treatment — and relief. A spirometry test is painless and only involves you breathing into a tube connected to the spirometer. To schedule an appointment to evaluate your breathing problem call the office nearest you to schedule a visit. You can also request an appointment online now.
Spirometry
Q & A
What is spirometry test for?
Spirometry is a test offered at every NY Family Docs office to assess your lung function. This simple noninvasive test measures how much air you can take in and breathe out in a certain time.
You’ll need spirometry to diagnose issues like shortness of breath, chronic cough, and persistent dizziness related to:
- Asthma
- Emphysema
- Chronic bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
After a physical exam and a review of your medical history, our staff can administer the spirometry test to confirm or rule out a diagnosis.
What can I expect during a spirometry test?
You will breathe into a tube that’s attached to a spirometer. Our staff will instruct you when to breathe and for how long.
Typically, you will take deep breaths and exhale into the tube several times to get an accurate measurement of your lung function.
In some cases, you receive an inhaled medication to open your airways after the initial round of tests to see if they improve your breathing.
Results of spirometry testing are immediate, and we will be able to discuss your diagnosis and potential treatments based on your test results.
Does spirometry testing cause any side effects?
Spirometry testing does require deep breaths, which can be difficult if you have an existing lung condition.
While the test itself is painless, you could experience additional breathing issues or side effects like:
Dizziness
Chest pain
Lightheadedness
If you have any of these symptoms during your test, tell the staff immediately to ensure you don’t have a more serious health condition.
How do I prepare for a spirometry test?
Prior to your visit, your healthcare provider will talk to you about how to prepare so that you get the most accurate results. This can involve not taking certain medications on the day of the test and not smoking for several hours before your appointment.
Don’t eat a large meal before the test and dress comfortably. Tight clothing sometimes interferes with your breathing.
To get an accurate diagnosis of shortness of breath or other breathing difficulties, spirometry testing is an easy tool to assist our providers in determining the reason. Call the office nearest you or book online if you are having difficulty breathing. You can also receive a same-day appointment if your symptoms are worrisome.
